Originally established in 1935, the original Wickford Yacht Club on Cornelius Island, was destroyed in 1938 by hurricane. The present location, on Pleasant Street in Historic Wickford Village, was established in 1968. Their mission is "to foster the sport of yachting and to provide suitable facilities and activities for its members."
Wickford Yacht Club is a private, members only organization of about 100 members. Applications are available.
Westwood YMCA is a camping and sporting facility for all ages. There are areas for customers to camp, and there are plenty of sports available for children and adults, including soccer, basketball, volleyball, archery, tennis and more. Located on the water, campers can take swimming lessons during the summer seasons. This facility is also available to rent for school, business or family functions.
Ocean State Soccer is devoted to respect, teamwork, safety, and building physical fitness. This volunteer-run organization works with children ages three to 18 in both recreational and competitive leagues during the spring and fall months.
The easy-to-navigate YMCA of South County provides plenty of programs and amenities for families and individuals. This Y has a full gymnasium, a five-lane 25-meter pool and a fitness room with cardio machines, free weights and strength-training machines. The Y of South County creates a family atmosphere that fosters both community and fitness.
This local Y is truly one of Barrington's great resources, as it more than lives up to the organization's commitment to family and community. With programs for young and old – including its youth swim team, the Bayside Stingrays – there's always something to do at the Y. It's especially great for moms and dads, who can use the Y's Prime Time and babysitting while they work out or take a yoga class. One nice plus: an outdoor swimming pool is open during the summer. And as part of YMCA of Greater Providence, members have full access to Ys in Rhode Island and Massachuestts.
In business since 1970, South County Youth Soccer provides local children ages four to 19 an opportunity to enjoy the sport of soccer. The league has over 75 league teams and eight travel teams, with over 800 families involved. Games are played at Tuckertown Park, Broad Rock Elementary School and Brousseau Park, each of which are beautifully maintained. In addition to league and travel play, the association also hosts the Seaside Classic, a tournament that will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2011. A phenomenal volunteer and coaching staff makes South County Youth Soccer the ideal avenue for kids to enjoy playing soccer.
