United Methodist Hour Then and Now The United Methodist Hour began as a radio program in 1971. Reverend John McCay, serving as Superintendent of Hattiesburg District of United Methodist Church at that time, supervised the start-up of the half hour program dedicated to spreading the gospel. By 1975, the program was airing on 15 radio stations across Mississippi. Executive Directors who followed McCay continued to expand the ministry to include what is now a half hour television program, which is broadcast on 16 television stations throughout Mississippi and other states in the Southeast. Time That Makes The Difference currently can be viewed throughout the United States, on line, and through The Hours podcast. The United Methodist Hour has consistently won broadcasting awards from Mississippi Baptists in Broadcasting and United Methodist Association of Communicators ( UMAC ). From the humble beginnings of The United Methodist Hour, there has always been a spirit of love and a hunger for fulfilling Gods will in the life of this ministry. God has continually blessed this ministry, preparing it for and pushing it toward new goals. It is this spirit that makes The United Methodist Hours history a special and meaningful one. The faith of men and women who pioneered a new kind of ministry in Mississippi and in Methodism, along with those who continue the tradition of ministry today, is what has made the difference. * * * * Coverage of Conference business sessions and worship services during its annual meetings each year. The Hour coverage is projected onto video screens during the proceedings and is taped to provide video archives for conference libraries. Additionally, dvds are offered to anyone who may want a copy of worship services for their own library. * * * * Guest preaching by The Mississippi Conference Bishop on Time That Makes The Difference the first Sunday of each month. This provides an avenue for the bishop to share words of faith with those who may not otherwise have that opportunity. Watch these programs on our viewer on the home page. * * * * The airing of United Methodist ministry ads during Time That Makes The Difference television programs. These are edited into our programs to offer another place that others may see how United Methodist Church ministers to the world. ackson County Civic Action Committee, Inc was founded on Aug. 31, 1965. The nonprofit, tax-exempt agency is a member of the Community Action Partnership. JCCAC is led by Executive Director Diann Payne and a Board of Directors selected from the community. JCCAC is one of more than a thousand Community Action Agencies ( CAA ) across the country founded as part of President Lyndon B. Johnsons Great Society In his State of the Union address on January 8, 1964, President Johnson proposed legislation he dubbed the War on Poverty. The Economic Opportunity Act passed on August 20, 1964. It created the now-defunct Office of Economic Opportunity. The OEO would found programs such as Head Start, Volunteers In Service To America ( VISTA ) and Job Corps as well as Community Action Programs The purpose of the Community Action Agencies is to empower the poor in effort to fight poverty. CAAs rely heavily on volunteer work and are funded largely through the Community Service Block Grant program. These Agencies work to promote self-sufficiency. Boards of CAAs are populated by representatives from public officials, the private sector and the poor. CAAs help their communities by promoting volunteerism and citizen participation, providing utility bill assistance for low-income individuals, administration of Head Start pre-school programs, job training and operating food pantries. JCCAC, in partnership with the Americas Promise Alliance, facilitates a number of programs directed at youth and education. Americas Promise was founded in 1997 with General Colin Powell as Chairman and is currently chaired by his mother, Alma Powell. Americas Promise Alliance is a cross-sector partnership of more than 300 corporations, nonprofits, faith-based organizations and advocacy groups. Americas Promise has established its list of five Promises: Caring Adults, Safe Places, A Healthy Start, Effective Education and Opportunities to Help Others. Through these promises, JCCAC is hoping to reduce Mississippis already grim drop-out rate. In 2007, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Promise Zone was established. As lead agency, JCCAC facilitates a number of programs aimed at reducing the drop-out rate and improving the lives of local children. Through school-based programs, JCCAC has formed partnerships with area public schools to implement valuable programs to a large number of students.

Mississippi Legal Services Coalition The Mississippi Legal Services coalition is a cooperative effort of North Mississippi Rural Legal Services, Mississippi Center for Legal Services, and The Mississippi Volunteer Lawyer Project. The Coalitions goals are to provide high quality legal representation and advice to our clients. Additionally, we provide educational and preventative information to assist our citizenry in avoiding problems. Therefore, we are not only providing fish but we are also teaching our clients how to fish. In order to find your way, it is helpful to understand how the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board is set up to do their work. The responsibilities of the Convention Board fall into three natural divisions. One division is Business Services, the funds that are received and distributed to Kingdom causes are handled following Biblical guidelines of Christian stewardship and absolute fiscal responsibility. The second division, Church Growth, oversees those areas of church ministries that strengthen, equip, and enable the church and its functions. The third division, Mission Strategy, is entrusted with the responsibility of the work beyond just the walls and doors of the church. Our mission is to reach the world across Mississippi, the nation, and the uttermost parts of the earth. So how did we deal with this downturn in giving and overall economic distress? Before the year began and we realized the shape of things to come, I asked all of our Mississippi Baptist Convention Board workers to help in cutting back. It was a cutback not on programs but on expenditures. We were committed to respond to every need, every church, and every association throughout the year but it was going to require all of us giving more time and covering more ground than ever. Our directors, consultants, and support staff have time after time stepped up to the plate to say, What can I do? Nothing goes undone and we have learned to do more with less in part, because of their exemplary dedication to the Lord and to Mississippi Baptists. While we took steps to cutback in the program areas of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board by 10 percent, of course, there were many areas where we could do nothing or little. In addition to that step, across the year we had a number of people who either retired from their service at the Convention Board or left to go serve in a different capacity in a different place. We did not have a hiring freeze, but I told our staff we were on a hiring hold. We did not replace any of the people who left. Rather we took their responsibilities and gathered some of the people who were capable and willing to fill that place during this time. It was remarkable how so many times when someone left very capable and willing people picked up a part, added to their responsibilities, and said, Lets go! In reality, we missed everyone who left, but we also were blessed to have people who would give more of their time, energy, and God-giftedness to do what needed to be done. That too enabled us to do what needed to be accomplished without any shortfall of ineffectiveness. The great people at our Convention Board have been at their best in the worst of times. As we face the future, it seems to be shaky and uncertain. Politically and socially, the promises that were made that change was coming have certainly been implemented. Maybe not as everyone envisioned and sadly maybe as some did envision but change is all around us. When it comes to the economy and the people of God having the resources and capability to respond and give, we trust that change will come and our churches will be stronger even financially. Even then there is the question of how strong will we respond in our on-going support of the mission that Jesus has given us. While we are in change, the fact is we are also in Christ in charge as individuals, churches, associations, and as a state convention. We will determine what we will do to make a difference for Christ in the days ahead. In Christ and by His grace we will be strong, we will recover, we will thrive, and we will reach out to a world that needs to hear of His saving power. The American Contract Bridge League was founded in 1937. It is the largest bridge organization in the world, with more than 160,000 members living in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda.
