The Amherst County Sheriff s Office is a full-service law enforcement agency that is responsible for covering more than 450 square miles in Virginia. It employs a staff of over 80 full- and part-time officers. The office maintains a Special Response Team (SRT) that deals with high-risk and dangerous situations, including warrant arrests and explosive devices, as well as heavily armed criminals and barricaded persons. The Amherst County Sheriff s Office also supports Emergency Medical Services (EMS), which is a nontransport advanced life support program that augments and enhances health care services provided by volunteer rescue squads. The Fairfax County Public Schools Alternative School Programs is a division of the Teen Alternative Program at Northwest Mental Health Center.
