One of the county's constitutional officers, the commonwealth's attorney prosecutes felony, misdemeanor, traffic and juvenile criminal cases in cooperation with law enforcement and the complaints of private citizens.
The Fairfax County Public Schools Nontraditional School Programs Computer Enhanced Instruction unit is located in suite 119 in the South County Government Center. The County Government Center also hosts the Gunston School and the Vista Day School at South County Juvenile Court, as well as Independent Study Alexandria.
The Department of Building and Development oversees the design and construction of new public and private structures to ensure that they conform to county standards. It works to ensure quality of life by mandating that builders employ best practices, and informs developers and other interested parties of county and statewide standards.
The Prince William County Sheriff's office is among the first of its kind in Virginia to receive accredidation through the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards. Glendell Hill is Sheriff and the office is located at the City Judicial Center in Manassas. The Sheriff's office has been serving the community since 1931, making it the oldest government agency in the county.
The grounds at Sully Historic Site served as the country home for Richard Bland Lee, northern Virginia's first congressman, back in the late 18th century. The house was built in 1794 on land that Lee inherited from his father. The inheritance also included livestock and 29 slaves, who operated the farm. Tours of the plantation are available Wednesday through Monday except on some holidays.
