Established in 1954, Pennyrile State Resort Park is a retreat center that is a part of the Kentucky State Parks System and has an area of 863 acres with a 56-acre lake. It was named after the tiny pennyroyal plant that was found in the woodlands surrounding this resort. The park organizes various events and programs, including naturalist-guided hiking, Easter buffet, photography, camping, storytelling, campfire, sports activities, art and craft making, pedal boat cruises, fishing and picnicking. It also has a gift shop that offers a selection of handcrafts and souvenirs. The center provides various meeting, lodging, dining and recreational facilities. It has more than 10 one- and two-bedroom cottages that offer lake views and several amenities, such as private boat and fishing docks, fireplaces and screened-in porches.
