The Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad was founded in 1958 and is a non-profit organization that provides emergency medical services to Millburn. The squad is staffed completely by volunteers and funded through private donations. Their services are also free of charge. All members must complete a 110-hour EMT course, which includes training in CPR and automatic cardiac defibrillators.
Oradell Fire Department was formed in 1895 by four men and was officially founded two years later. The department had its first firehouse on Kinderkamack Road near Ridgewood Avenue to house the hand-drawn hose jumper and ladder cart. The department purchased its first motorized fire engines in 1916 and 1917.
In 1949, Oradell Fire Department moved to its new firehouse on the corner of Kinderkamack Road and Center Street, across the street from Borough Hall. The building was renovated in 2004 to create additional space for the growing department. The department has two engines, a ladder truck and a squad truck. For water-related emergencies, it uses a scuba truck and two marine boats.
The Green Village Volunteer Fire Department has been providing fire and rescue services to the Chatham and Harding Townships since 1922. There 42 active volunteer fire fighters and 34 auxiliary members who are trained friends, neighbors, family and members of the community volunteering to protect more than 1000 homes and businesses. It assists in search and rescues, auto accidents, hazardous material spills, gas leaks and downed power lines. Kinnelon Volunteer Fire Company was first organized on Jan. 30, 1930. The first fire truck was purchased from the Bloomingdale Fire Company in 1938. The all-volunteer company recruits members 14 years old and up. There are about 50 members in the company.
The Garwood Police Department is located within the Garwood Municipal Building. The department employs 16 officers and four civilian dispatchers. William D. Legg is chief, and has served as such since 2006.
Garwood's Volunteer Fire Department handles more than 150 calls per year. In addition to putting out fires, members are trained in rescue, fire prevention and hazardous materials. The department has three engines and 43 volunteer firefighters. Those interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter should contact the department directly.

The Lake Hiawatha Fire Department -- Fire District No. 4 -- has been serving the community since 1935. It operates with two engines, a ladder, a fire command vehicle and a support vehicle. The department is staffed by an all-volunteer crew of six officers, 25 firefighters and a chaplain.
Through the years, it has assisted residents in fires, floods, traffic accidents and other emergencies. In 1980, it also did protection duty for Vice President George Bush during his visit to Parsippany. The department sponsors numerous community events throughout the year, including Fire Prevention Week, when it opens its doors to residents and schoolchildren for firehouse tours and educational seminars.
