The runway at the Oakland/Troy Airport is open to aircraft that weigh 15,500 pounds or less. The facility serves as the county's executive airport and is frequented by business travelers and tourists using private, corporate and charter aircraft.
John Mahoney, who heads daily operations at the Troy airport, said the facility's low fees help the airport provide a valuable and friendly service to pilots.
Landing fees are $15 for aircraft that weigh 12,501 pounds or more. Ramp parking is free on the first night for visiting aircraft and $5 each additional day. Hangar parking is available for $15 per day or $335 per month.
The Mission of Deeds is a nonprofit organization staffed by a group of dedicated volunteers in Reading. The organization purchases beds with cash donations and distributes them, along with donated furniture and other household items in good condition, to needy families and individuals living in Middlesex and Essex counties. Since the Mission of Deeds' inception in 1993, it has provided assistance to more than 7,000 families who have been referred to them by social service agencies such as shelters, elder care agencies and hospitals.
Recipients of assistance include individuals and families from diverse ethnic, religious, cultural and racial backgrounds. More than half of the families who receive assistance are mothers and their children, many of whom have lived at shelters for homeless and battered women. Others receiving assistance include the elderly, especially those who have been abandoned by family members; middle-aged men and women who have lost their homes and possessions; and the mentally or physically handicapped who have little or no means of support. The Mission relies solely on the donation of funds, furniture and other household items for distribution to those in need of assistance. In fact, their entire workforce, excepting two staff members, are volunteers. Additional acceptable donations include tables and chairs, linens, lamps, pots and pans, and other household items in good, usable condition.
Home to the 19-member Nassau County Legislature, the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building is located on the corner of Old Country Road and Franklin Avenue. While the Legislative building has a Mineola address, the building is actually located within the boundaries of the Village of Garden City, which donated the four acres of land the building sits on.
Originally built as the Nassau County Court House, then-Governor of New York Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of the building on July 13, 1900. A mural portraying the event is located near the building's main rotunda and a statue of the 26th U.S. President and 33rd Governor of New York is located in front of the building.
During the 1930s, a new courthouse was commissioned to be built on Old Country Road. The Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building had been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, but no efforts at restoration or renovation had been made until an extensive $63.5 million project was undertaken in 2002 and completed in 2008.
