The Planning and Development Department of Aiken County Government provides assistance to the citizens of Aiken County through its four divisions, including Codes, E-911, GIS Mapping and Planning. The department s codes division is responsible for issuing permits for buildings, swimming pools and mobile homes and the E-911 division issues and verifies street addresses in the area. The department s geographic information system mapping division maintains the area s maps including tax, zoning and political maps. The department s planning division assists developers with their plans for land development such as creating new subdivisions and mobile home parks and with site plans for nonresidential developments. The planning division is also responsible for transportation planning and zoning administration. It is based in Aiken, S.C.

The Aiken County Detention Center houses an average of 375 to 450 inmates, who are awaiting trial or serving sentences less than 90 days. Opened in 2002, the detention center is a medium security facility with various minimum to maximum security housing units. It employs a staff of more than 70 sworn and administrative officers. The Aiken County Detention Center offers a variety of services, such as medical, food, inmate commissary, inmate telephone system and barber, as well as supports a volunteer chaplain program. The Aiken County Administrator is in charge of implementation of policies, procedures and regulations adopted by the Aiken County Council and ensures compliance of the policies by county departments. Located in Aiken, S.C., the county administrator prepares and recommends the annual operating budget and capital program to county council and supervises the implementation of the approved budget. Additionally, the Aiken County Administrator offers services that include customer service recognition, job openings, risk management, senior citizen s tax work-off and victims assistance. The senior citizens tax work-off program allows people who are 60 years or older to work for county departments to earn an amount equal to the Aiken County portion of their property taxes. The administrator is also responsible for administration of all county departments under the supervision of council.
