The neighborhood behind the church, one of the toniest in Royal Oak, is also known as the Shrine neighborhood. The church was named after Saint Thérèse of Lisieu, a saint known as the little flower. Thousands of people lined the streets to pay homage to her remains when they were displayed at the church in the mid-2000s. The massive church was created through the fund-raising efforts of Father Charles Coughlin, who had a popular radio show.
