Snug between Black Dog Water St. Bakery and the Corner 5 Surf Shop (also owned by BD family) lies the seasonal store BD Gear. Focussing on sporting good related clothing and accessories, it sells items for golf, tennis, bicycling, boating, including tote bags, umbrellas, utility knives and such. Much of the gear is made exclusively for BD by the Reebok corporation. The store does not carry the general merchandise or kids items that other BD stores do, but those are just a few footsteps away from this location.
Vineyard Playhouse presents new and classic stage works year-round. Educational programs for children and workshops for local talent are an important part of this organization's mission. Summer events include free outdoor presentations of Shakespeare and children's programming.
The Vineyard Haven Yacht Club is a private, members-only club offering sailing, tennis and swimming recreation. Tennis and sailing lessons are available for all age groups as are family and social events. The yacht club also sponsors a number of regattas and tennis tournaments.
The Polly Hill Arboretum was founded in 1958 by horticulturalist Polly Hill. Today, her mission of sharing knowledge of plants and scientific procedure through educational programs, research, plant conservation and exploration is at the core of the Polly Hill mission. Open year round, the 60+ acre grounds includes rare trees and plants from around the world as well as many acres of native meadowland.
The Vineyard Conservation Society is an organization dedicated to protecting the environment, habitats and resources on Martha's Vineyard. It offers a variety of educational programs for all ages, and participates in initiatives that help keep the ecosystem healthy and thriving. These initiatives range from promoting more eco-friendly habits among residents to larger-scale legislative action. The Vineyard Conservation Society also hosts events, exhibitions and family programs. Volunteers, new members and donations are always welcome.
Island Elderly Housing is an assisted living facility that caters to low-income elderly and disabled residents of Martha's Vineyard. The community contains 165 apartments across four campuses.
Sail MV occupies the historic Mayhew Schoolhouse on Main Street and is run by Hope Callen, administrator director, and her husband, Brock, who is the program director and teacher of the MV Regional High School's maritime studies.
Sail MV is an non-profit educational organization focused on connecting islanders and visitors to the island's maritime heritage through the curriculum it has developed for the high school (first in the state), sponsoring its sailing team, and through teaching sailing to children (age 8 & up) and adults. It hosts a Captain's licensing course and offers evening and off-season courses, too. The sailing instruction takes place at the Sailing Camp Park on the Lagoon in Oak Bluffs.
