( The above statements are taken from the Smithfield United Church of Christ Strategic Plan 2007-2012. At that time Pittsburgh was only a small village numbering around 250 people, many of whom were German. In 1787 the grandson and great-grandson of William Penn gave the little congregation a deed to property on Smithfield Street. No buildings were erected on this plot, however, until 1791 because the land was so far out of town. Today it stands in the middle of Pittsburghs business and shopping district. In 1812 the congregation named itself the German Evangelical Protestant Church, the first such church in the world. English was adopted as the official language in 1928. The church united with the Slavonic Congregational Church in 1960 and was federated with Smithfield United Methodist Church in 1968. The affiliation with the United Methodist Church was discontinued June 1, 1994. Smithfield United Church of Christ is a diverse congregation, its members coming from across the metropolitan Pittsburgh area. We maintain our original intent of freedom of thought, open-mindedness, and respect for different beliefs. The people of Smithfield United Church of Christ, meet to worship and serve in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. We are a diverse and wonderful group. Together with our senior minister Doug Patterson, associate minister Susan Cherian, education minister Liddy Gerchman Barlow and a dedicated church staff and council, we are an open, vibrant congregation joining hand, hearts, and minds to glorify God. As a recent New York Times ad for our denomination, United Church of Christ, says: With all Christians, we rest in God s amazing grace and hear God s voice in the words of Scripture. Yet, the UCC is unique to some because we do not require uniformity of belief. We are a church of open ideas, extravagant welcome and evangelical courage. Our passion for democracy extends to both government and church, where decision-making rests within each individual congregation. We support liberty in our pulpits, just as we affirm the individual conscience of our 1.2-million members to agree, disagree and wrestle with life s biggest questions in a spirit of love. Our story is this nation s story. We are the people of the Mayflower. More than 600 of our 5700 congregations were formed before 1776. Eleven signers of the Declaration of Independence were member of UCC predecessor bodies. As early abolitionists, we came to the aid of the Amistad captives and founded hundreds of schools across the South after the Civil War. We were the first mainline church to ordain an African-American ( 1785 ), a woman ( 1853 ) and an openly gay pastor ( 1972 ). We were also the first to form a foreign mission society ( 1810 ). Our multi-ethnic membership includes persons from every immigrant group, as well as native peoples and descendants of freed slaves. Our unity is not dependent upon uniform agreement, but in our shared allegiance to Jesus Christ. Ours is a risk-taking church, because ours is a risk-taking God. God is still speaking!

This beautiful church dating back to the mid-19th century is on the National Register of Historic Places. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, with authentic Tiffany stained glass windows and featuring a rare Welte-Tripp pipe organ, it's no wonder the church is such a popular tourist attraction. Having two denominational affiliations, the Church of the Covenant is a federated congregation of the Presbyterian Church and the United Church of Christ and welcomes around 120 members every Sunday. Among the non-profit organizations operating within the historic structure as partners of the church are the Gallery NAGA, Coro Allegro and the Women's Lunch Place, a homeless shelter that has been serving Boston for nearly 30 years.

With natural light streaming through the 15th-century English-style stained glass windows, the sanctuary of Old South Church is free and open to the public during the day. Donations are welcome. There's a steady stream of people walking in from off the street to learn more about the history and services, or to sit in one of the pews to pray.

Built in 1875, the church is an important historical structure of Boston. The progressive congregation was founded in 1669.

Every Sunday, services include a morning prayer and communion at 9am and a festival worship at 11am. There's also a healing worship at 10am on the second Sunday of the month, and a jazz worship at 6pm every Thursday. You can download sermon podcasts online, and sign up for the e-newsletter.

Old South Church also provides Christian education programs for children, youth and adults; community outreach and mission trips; a strong music program; and the Old South Preschool, a non-religious preschool for children ages 2 to 5-years-old.
