North Carolina Aquariums was established in 1976 to promote awareness of the diverse natural and cultural resources associated with oceans, estuaries, rivers and streams of North Carolina. The aquarium includes indoor and outdoor exhibits, classrooms, meeting rooms, an auditorium and a gift shop. It offers various daily programs that feature live animal programs, marine life videos and audience participation games. North Carolina Aquariums features a variety of fish, alligators, sea turtles and snakes. The aquarium is a division of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Rollins Laboratory is a satellite laboratory of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network. It is responsible for providing rapid diagnostics for foreign animal diseases of swine and poultry. The laboratory accepts all species. It is accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. The laboratory is the central laboratory of the North Carolina Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System, which assists owners and veterinarians in diagnosing diseases of livestock and poultry and in preventing outbreaks of catastrophic foreign animal diseases by early detection. It also conducts histopathological and cytologies examinations. The laboratory sends specimens for procedures to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa. Founded in 1932, North Carolina Symphony organizes more than 175 music performances in concert halls, auditoriums, gymnasiums and the outdoor settings annually. The orchestra performs in various states and in the District of Columbia throughout the United States. The Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site in Asheville is a National Landmark operated by North Carolina State Historic Site to commemorate renowned author Thomas Clayton Wolfe. The "Old Kentucky Home" boarding house where Wolfe lived as a child, was the inspiration for his 1929 autobiographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel and has been preserved for students and visitors to experience his life and literary work.

The memorial provides limited free parking adjacent to visitor's center. If full, visitors may park at the Rankin Street Garage, where parking is free for the first hour.

Best and worst time to go to The Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site
The memorial receives the most visitors on Saturdays and during the month of July. Tours are limited to 15, but staff makes an effort to work in extra tours during peak seasons. January and February tend to be their slowest season.

Admission to The Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site
The Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site is open to the public from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. House tours begin at the bottom of each hour and cost $5 for adults and $2 for students. Group tours are available by reservation. Call 828-253-8304 for more information.

Visitors and students at The Thomas Wolfe Memorial Home have the opportunity to view a film about Wolfe's life, see the home through a guided tour, and participate in hands-on activities to demonstrate the daily household chores from the time period.

After his death in 1938, Thomas Wolfe was buried in Asheville's Riverside Cemetery. His grave can be viewed at 53 Birch Street off Pearson Drive near the Asheville Visitors Center.

Established in 1884, Central Prison is one of the first-built prisons in North Carolina. It is spread over an area of more than 30 acres and is enclosed by a double-wire fence with razor ribbon on top. Central Prison s facilities include a plate fabrication unit, print shop, mental health care wings, and a more than 85-bed acute care hospital with a pharmacy, mobile surgical unit, operating rooms and X-ray laboratories. It offers various job assignments, including barbering, janitorial work, and kitchen, laundry and canteen labor for inmates according to their skill levels. Additionally, it provides substance abuse group therapy, Bible study and worship services, as well as conducts various recreational activities. Central Prison is located in Raleigh, N.C., and is administered by the North Carolina Department of Correction, which manages various prisons and correctional facilities.

North Carolina Vital Records is a unit of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. The unit is responsible for registering all births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages and divorces that occur in North Carolina. Its registration process involves a statewide system of hospitals, funeral directors, registers of deeds, local health department staff and others who register vital events. Once vital events have been registered, North Carolina Vital Records preserves the individual vital records in a secure environment. When appropriate, its records are corrected, amended and even replaced.
