At 33,000-square feet, White Oak Community Recreation Center is the largest recreation facility in the county.
Among the building's features are a basketball court, a fitness center, a climbing wall, special rooms for art and culinary classes and a banquet hall.
The center also features programming for people over 55. Available Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until January 2013, when it will open for an extra day on Friday, the senior program creates fitness, wellness and social opportunities.
The center opened with limited hours on May 14 and a dedication ceremony was held June 23, 2012.
Earth Treks Climbing Center is the state-of-the-art indoor rock climbing experience for every person wanting a challenge.
Since 1990, more than 20,000 people have learned to climb at Earth Treks. There are a ways to learn to climb based on age, interests and goals. It is best for beginners to start with an open climb which offers an introduction to climbing. Next comes learning the basics for teens and adults. This lays the foundation to becoming an experienced climber with growing skill levels.
The next step comes with a climbing expedition organized by Earth Treks. Treks go to Cotopaxi, Ecuador and Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Ice climbing courses are part of the offerings. There are also private expeditions that are part of the Wharton School of Business Leadership Ventures Program.
Earth Treks has a complete gym and organizes yoga classes to help get into shape for serious climbing. It also has rental equipment, pro shop, healthy snacks, showers and lockers. Special events are also available.
The Rockville Earth Treks is located behind The Marlo Building. Other locations are in Timonium and Maryland.
Plum Gar Community Recreation Center offers a wide range of classes, activities and programs for residents in the area. The location has numerous features, including a gymnasium area, kitchen, conference room and lounge area. Open gym memberships are available for residents ages 16 and older. Some activities include sports classes, crafts classes, as well as dance and music classes. The location also has a conference room. This quiet park features a garden, paths, benches and a gazebo. It sits on the former site of the Gaithersburg Public Library, which was destroyed by a fire. The site was formerly known as Lee Street Park.
This center features a full-sized gymnasium, a weight/exercise room, an art room, a social hall, a conference room, a lobby/lounge area and a community room. A variety of recreational opportunities and classes are available for all ages, including pottery. The facility is located next to the Town of Chevy Chase government offices and Leland Community Park.
The South Bowie Community Center is a local recreation center with an array of amenities, including a gymnasium, racquetball court, basketball court and a fitness room. The center also boasts a conference room, an electronic area with television and gaming systems and a variety of programming, including after-school programs, camps and cultural events.
