This specialty school trains students who have gone on to perform in Hollywood and New York. For those who don't make it there, there is the local recital for parents and friends. Turning Pointe trains serious dancers, singers and musicians, with many age 12 or a little older. It is also a friendly place for boys and girls to build confidence and make lifetime friendships while having fun as recreational performers. Instructors train their students in dance, music, voice and personal fitness. Dancers range from age 3 to adult, but most are teens. For parents who think their kid is the next big thing, there is a Pop Star song-and-dance class that hopes to create the next Lady Gaga. The school's expectation for students is to improve their self control, to boost their self-esteem and to fine-tune their organizational abilities. Turning Pointe celebrates its 30th year in business in 2010 and has been at its present location on Harper for about a decade. The inside is deceptively large, with 9,100 square feet spread out over three dance studios and a fitness room. The parking lot is shared with a busy eatery and is small and difficult to navigate.
