Founded in 1969, The Buttonwood Park Zoological Society is a private, nonprofit corporation that supports educational programs, family events and improvement activities at Buttonwood Park Zoo. The society offers wildlife preservation programs. Buttonwood Park Zoo is owned by the City of New Bedford and houses a variety of animals. It is nationally accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association and is one of the oldest zoos in the United States. Established in 1894, the zoo conducts breeding programs for rare and minor domestic animals. It is also involved in several regional, national and international conservation and research projects for endangered and threatened species.

New Bedford Police Department was established in 1847, and is located in New Bedford, Mass. Its staff consists of chief of police, sergeants, deputy chiefs of police, patrol officers, captains, civilian employees and lieutenants. Its division, New Bedford Animal Control Office, investigates cases involving animal bites, abused or neglected animals, stray dogs, and sick or injured animals. Citizens Police Academy is an interactive program designed to inform the public about law, policies and procedures, and a behind the scene look at police work. The academy is funded through a Federal Block Grant, and the course is offered twice a year. Its curriculum includes constitutional law, laws of arrest, narcotics investigation, domestic violence, motor vehicle law and drunk driving, and participation at the police range.

Immigrant Social Services, providing information, case management and referrals in a variety of areas to limited, non-English speakers ( Portuguese, Cape Verdean Creole and Spanish ). Educational Programs including ESOL, Citizenship and Native Language Citizenship classes as well as Citizenship Preparation Assistance. Elderly Services: The Senior Coordinator provides escort and advocacy, on-going interpretation, access and supportive services to the limited to non-English speaking elders and Caregivers. Services include assistance in navigating through all of the changes in the health care system, connecting elders to existing benefits and programs that meets their economic and social needs. Deportation Support Services: The Case Manager provides daily outreach at the Bristol County House of Correction to inmates who are legal permanent residents and are facing deportation due to the severely restricted laws under Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act ( IIRAIRA ) that was passed in 1996. The IAC collaborates with the Azores and Cape Verde to transmit information regarding deportees and exchange information regarding health and social issues. The IAC also provides support and social services to their families. The IAC is also a member of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program through United Way and the National Board.
