While attending Felton High School, Warren Price decided to turn one of his hobbies into a small business so he might be able to pay his way through the University of Delaware. In 1961, he decided to start selling BSA motorcycles on his family property in Viola, Delaware. He soon realized that he would need to carry inventory so he arranged to have a credit facility finance the vehicles. The only problem was his age since he was not yet 18 when he filled out the application. "I said I was 19, if I had told them my actual age none of this would have happened, " confesses Mr. Price. "It was pretty basic back then, the parts department was under my bed and service was in a corner of my parents shed, " says Mr. Price. In 1965 Warren decided to move off "the porch" in Viola and built a dealership on RT 13, south of Camden, that would carry BSA and Yamaha motorcycles. Soon after, he was approached by Honda and took on that franchise. "When the Yamaha rep saw I had Honda he got real upset and pulled out all his inventory, " reflects Mr. Price. Triumph was popular so he started selling them also but it was the addition of Honda that really got the business rolling. This was the "you meet the nicest people on a Honda" era and business boomed. In 1971, sensing the need to expand he went out on a limb again and purchased a larger piece of property on the opposite side of the highway and built a 16, 000 square foot facility where Diamond Motor Sports is today. "Those were really scary times, I was in debt so deep I thought I would never get out." But Mr. Prices keen business sense kept the business growing and caught the attention of American Honda. In 1973 Diamond Motor Sports was one of the few motorcycle dealerships that was permitted to sell the, then new, Honda Automobiles. With the growth of the car sales Mr. Price purchased more property north of Diamond Motor Sports and built a separate automobile store. Over the years he has expanded his operations to include Price Honda, Price Acura, Price Buick Pontiac GMC Truck, Airport Toyota Dodge and Newark Toyota World as well. Mr. Price still runs the organization but relies on his management teams to handle the day to day activities of the individual dealerships. Diamond Motor Sports team consists of General Manager, Stewart Crouch (27 years with the store ), Sales Manager, Chris Tazelaar (12 years with the store ), Service Manager Mike Rush (32 years in the business ), and Controller Arlene Hock (26 years with the store ).
