Friends of the Wissahickon is a nonprofit organization that works to preserve the Wissahickon Valley. The valley runs through West Mount Airy and is part of Fairmount Park. The group helps maintain trails throughout the valley, manages the growth of vegetation and generally tries to protect open space. It also sponsors educational programs and lectures. It is run, in part, by a 28-member Board of Directors which contains representatives from communities in the valley area. It also has a full-time staff and shares office space with the Chestnut Hill Historical Society, in Chestnut Hill.

Founded in 1969, Focus on Renewal is a full-service community center that provides health care and social services. The center offers parenting classes, day care and family services for senior citizens, young children and infants. Focus on Renewal provides educational, legal aid, and drug and alcohol counseling services, as well as group, family and marital therapies through various centers. The center maintains a community-based system of care for children and youth with serious emotional disturbances. Additionally, it operates a credit union that provides financial assistance to individuals with a weak economical background. The center s credit union has more than 450 members. With multiple satellite locations, Focus on Renewal serves the residents of McKees Rocks and Stowe Township, Pa.
