Located in Norfolk, Va., ForKids was established in 1988 and strives to end homelessness for families and their children. It offers a variety of services and organizes several residential programs, as well as serves an average of 75 to 100 families and more than 200 children each year. The agency s special holiday programs offer services to an additional 120 children and their families. ForKids has provided shelter for over 1,400 families and nearly 3,000 children since its inception. Its range of services includes case management, family counseling, employment coaching, debt reduction and financial counseling, housing placement, and art and play therapies. The agency also administers various life skills classes for children and adults, sports activities, and hot meals and homework tutoring programs.

Doorways for Women and Families, formerly known as The Arlington Community Temporary Shelter and TACTS, provides care services for women and children affected with domestic violence and homelessness. Founded in 1978, it is a nonprofit organization that offers self-sufficiency, violence prevention, advocacy, shelter, housing support and community education services. The organization administers a court advocacy program that includes victim assistance, crisis intervention, safety planning and referral services. Doorways for Women and Families provides the Financial Independence Track program, which features financial literacy through individualized assessments and debt management counseling. It offers rental subsidies and educational, employment and financial skills building assistance through its HomeStart Supportive Housing Program. Additionally, it participates in a variety of fundraising events. Doorways for Women and Families is located in Arlington, Va.

Hope's Treasures, a thrift store operated by the Good Shepherd Alliance. Whether it's clothing, shoes, CDs, furniture, electronics, jewelry, purses, toys, books or a myriad of other needs you're after, it might not hurt to try this store first. A nearly new Greg Norman golf shirt, an untouched Jimi Hendrix t-shirt, brand new athletic shirts with the tags still on them, barely used dress shoes, nice sport jackets are all here on the racks. Proceeds from the store, along with other donations help support the GSA's mission. The GSA is a nonprofit Christian organization with stated goal of assisting women, children and families in crisis. The primary assistance provided includes emergency shelter, food, clothing, children's programs, counseling and transitional housing for pregnant women. Headquartered at the Ashburn Road location, the alliance also has a thrift store in Sterling.

Falls Church Homeless Shelter is a community resource providing nightly respite from harsh weather to individuals without a place to stay; the shelter is operational from December 1 through March 31. The shelter can house 12 individuals at any one given time, with separate sleeping and showering facilities for women; each resident has access to a storage locker in addition to their bed, and can also reserve the bed for the following night. Residents who do not show up at the shelter on time forfeit their place to another homeless individual in need.
