The center is engaged in evidence-based research, data collection, empirical assessment, and quantitative and qualitative analysis. The Arkansas Center for Health Improvement develops health care programs in collaboration with health professionals, policy makers, business leaders, academicians and consumers. It is jointly supported by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Arkansas Department of Health and Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The unit specializes in the fields of therapeutic nutrition, mammography, radiation therapy and ambulatory prenatal care. It provides disease prevention, diagnostic, case management, pregnancy testing, chemotherapy and health assessment services. The unit additionally offers family planning, community education, patient referral, nursing, surgical, immunization and consulting solutions. It coordinates the 5-a-Day for Better Health program and the Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System. The unit also provides the BreastCare Program, which offers free education, screening and treatment solutions for women suffering from breast cancer. It offers information and counseling services to families for the death of an infant due to sudden infant death syndrome. Pulaski County Health Unit is a part of the Arkansas Department of Health.
