About Foundation Since its inception in 1986 the mission of the Foundation has been to enhance the quality of publiceducation in Lee County by increasing community involvement in, and support for, Lee County public schools. Twenty-two years ago, a diverse group of local business and community leaders created the Foundation. These concerned individuals realized that the cornerstone of an economically strong community was a quality public education system. The purpose of every initiative of The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, Inc is to create and enhance opportunities for our public school students and teachers. Our goals are accomplished by providing many distinctive programs. In-school programs are expanded with additional resources such as new titles being added to the Jim and Ellie Newton Childrens Literature Center. Students are given unique learning opportunities through programs such as Classroom Grants, the and Art Speak. Teachers are recognized for their excellence in teaching through the Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Program and encouraged to continue to implement best practices in their classrooms through quality training offered at the Collegium for the Advancement of Education. Over the past 22 years, more than $27 million dollars has been invested through The Foundation to enhance and enrich the public school experience for our teachers and students.

About Pediatric Cancer Foundation In 1991, two Tampa mothers faced every parents worst nightmare. Pediatric Cancer. Melissa Helms and Risa Tramel met while their infant daughters were undergoing treatments at St. Josephs Childrens Hospital in Tampa. Through advancements made from research, both Melissa and Risas daughters survived their battles with cancer and are now healthy young adults. However, with this experience, Melissa and Risa gained an awareness that would inspire them to continue fighting this disease. In 1991, Melissa and Risa co-founded the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to fund research that will lead to the elimination of childhood cancer worldwide. For the past 18 years, the Foundation has funded more than $3.8 million to researchers. For the first 15 years, we funded seed grants at St. Joesphs Childrens Hospital and H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa, All Childrens Research Institute in St. Petersburg, the University of Florida in Gainesville, the University of Miami School of Medicine. Great headway was made with these projects, but the progress was slow. We realized that the only way to speed up the process was to encourage leading doctors and researchers to work together. In 2005, the Pediatric Cancer Foundation formed The Sunshine Project, an innovative collaboration with one goal: to bring together the nations top doctors and researchers to fast-track new treatments and increase the survival rate for children battling cancer.
