As a sports medicine physician, I take care of athletes of all ages who have sustained some type of injury or condition that limits their desired activities. With both a long-term practice at Dartmouth-Hitchcock and as the head team physician for Dartmouth College Athletics for 25 years, I have a wide perspective of orthopaedic care. I enjoy helping older patients who encounter difficulty in returning to their recreational interests and healthy lifestyle as much as the elite athlete who is trying to return to competition. Orthopaedics is a unique area of medicine where we are usually helping to restore reduced function rather than treating a disease. When someone feels that they don’t have full function we try to get them back to a place where they can return to the activities they want to do. When I meet with patients, I do my best to clearly explain their condition and the best treatment options. I also make sure there is plenty of time for my patients and their family members to ask questions. My goal is to help my patients return to the activities they want to do and to feel pleased with the care that they’ve received while here. Orthopaedics at Dartmouth-Hitchcock The Department of Orthopaedics wants to improve your quality of life and get you back to doing the things you enjoy most. Our team includes specialists in every area of orthopaedic medicine including: Foot / Ankle Surgery Hand / Wrist Surgery Joint Replacement for Hip and Knee Arthritis Orthopaedic Oncology Pediatric Orthopaedics Shoulder / Elbow Surgery Spine Surgery / Back Pain Sports Medicine Trauma / Fracture Care We work with you and your family to determine the best surgical or non-surgical treatment approach for you. Our goal is to provide the best results and help you achieve your goals.

I was motivated to specialize in neurology when I became fascinated with the nervous system in medical school. I enjoy being part of a field in which diagnosis, treatment and options for care are continually evolving and improving. I take great pleasure from working with patients and caregivers to help them understand and manage the neurologic conditions that affect their lives.

I specialize in peripheral nerve surgery, with a focus on injury to and reconstruction of the network of nerves that conducts signals from the spinal cord to the shoulder, arm and hand. I treat patients with epilepsy and pain syndromes, including facial pain. Patients with these complex and challenging neurological illnesses require thoughtful, detailed and effective multi-disciplinary evaluation and treatment. At Dartmouth-Hitchcock, I am proud to be part of an outstanding neuroscience team. I believe that we can make a difference in our patients’ lives by providing expert, technically excellent, compassionate care. Honest, direct communication, and listening are good medicine. Surgery is not always the answer and the best outcome is one that is most meaningful and beneficial for the patient. I value my patients’ time, respect their choices, and honor their trust.

A major part of my job is to educate patients and families about headache medicine. When I first meet a patient, I spend a lot of time getting to know them. We discuss their history of headaches, factors that contribute to worsening pain, as well as what they have tried and not tried previously. I let them know that there are many causes of headaches, and many treatments. I strive to treat the whole person, not just their headaches. Learning the details about a persons sleep patterns, stressors and moods can directly affect the treatments I use for headache management. I explain that migraines can be frustrating for all parties involved, but, through a multidisciplinary and team-based approach, I hope to assist my patients to manage their pain more appropriately. I consider my care successful when my patients can start living their lives again. Migraines can be quite debilitating, so when patients can go about their day and not miss important events because of their headaches, I know what we are doing is helping.

Neurology is a large, challenging field that is continually evolving. Working in this field allows me to draw on my life-long interest in science, while also giving me an opportunity to build strong relationships with patients. A vital part of building those relationships is having caring, open conversations with my patients. I listen to their concerns, questions and needs, and I help educate them about their medical condition. These conversations help us develop a close relationship where my patients can feel at ease confiding in me. By working closely with my patients, I can help them make more informed decisions about their medical care and help them do well despite difficult circumstances. Neurology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock The Department of Neurology aims to provide you with compassionate and expert neurological care. I joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at DHMC because of its reputation for patient-centered care with an emphasis on shared decision making and attention to patient-reported outcomes. I truly believe that DHMC places patient needs above all other priorities and this matches my philosophy of care perfectly. By utilizing proven treatment methods and listening carefully to the individual needs of my patients, my primary goal is to always provide compassionate and comprehensive care. I try to keep patients informed about their options so they can participate in making their own decisions, and to treat every patient as if they are part of my family. As a specialist in shoulder surgery, I perform a wide range of surgical procedures for the shoulder, ranging from common procedures to very complex reconstructive procedures. My surgical practice features arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, primary and revision shoulder replacement surgery including reverse total shoulder replacement, repair of shoulder instability, reconstruction of shoulders that have had previous surgery, shoulder arthroscopy and treatment of fractures around the shoulder. I am fortunate to work with an excellent team of providers who also specialize in shoulder care and work with me on a daily basis to provide comprehensive care of all shoulder problems. This includes a dedicated group of physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physical therapists and athletic trainers. Most of the time, our team can improve pain and dysfunction of the shoulder without surgery, which is always our goal whenever possible. Sometimes, the best treatment to restore function and decrease pain is through surgery. I practice evidence-based medicine, using the latest research and up-to-date thinking to guide care of my patients. The other side of my professional life is my desire to contribute to our understanding of shoulder conditions through my own research. I spend a great deal of my free time thinking about shoulder problems and coming up with ways that we can improve our knowledge through scientific research. I have published many papers and textbook chapters on a wide range of shoulder conditions, including shoulder replacement, shoulder fractures, rotator cuff repair, labral tears, shoulder instability and the cost-effectiveness of shoulder surgery. I enjoy working in partnership with my patients. I listen to their concerns and ask about their goals and expectations. Whether their goal is to hike Mt. Moosilauke or to play with their grandchildren, I want to be help them get back to what brings them joy and returns them to the life they want. Quality of life is important! Recovering from an injury can take time. If a patient feels discouraged about their progress, I can help show them how far they’ve come by referring them back to their own statements about how they were feeling earlier in treatment. By using patient-reported outcomes, I can say, “This is where you were, and this is where you are now” so they can clearly see their progress. My patients and I work collaboratively to help return them to the highest level of function possible based on their health issue and the evidence-based treatment options. My goal is to give patients the type of care I would expect as a patient: care that is supportive and understandable. I spend time with each patient to discuss all the possible treatments paths clearly so that the patient can make an informed choice. As a neurologist for over 35 years, I’ve seen a lot and I want to use that experience and expertise to help people. I enjoy making a correct diagnosis and effectively treating my patients’ conditions. But what’s equally important to me is working together with a patient and their family to best manage their neurological condition.
