Eugene Water & Electric Board, also known as EWEB, is one of the largest public utility companies in Oregon. Chartered by the city of Eugene as a municipal utility with a separate elected board, EWEB provides electricity, water and steam to more than 83,000 homes, business, schools and other customers in Eugene, Ore. Founded in 1911, the board, in partnership with other local agencies, offers assistance to farmers and growers in disposing unwanted chemicals through its agricultural chemical program. The utility provides more than $700,000 annually to support education programs on energy and water resources. It also offers various recreational opportunities, from trails along the Walterville Power Canal to boating and fishing at Carmen Reservoir on the upper McKenzie River. The utility supports a variety of community events, including Eugene Celebration and the annual Solar Challenge race for middle school students.

Migrant Seasonal Head Start, also known as MSHS, is a federal program that works to promote school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of the children of migrant and seasonal farmworkers. It offers educational, health, nutritional and social services to enrolled children and families. MSHS provides grants to local public and private nonprofit agencies to provide child development services to economically disadvantaged children and families. The program focuses on helping preschool children to develop early reading and math skills. Migrant Seasonal Head Start serves children up to 5 from low-income families. It develops language, prereading and writing skills and basic number concepts. The program s staff members receive training in child development and early childhood education. Migrant Seasonal Head Start is a part of the Oregon Child Development Coalition, which is a nonprofit organization that was established in 1971 and ensures access to early childhood care and educational opportunities for children.
