Founded by eight Wilton families in 1972, Zion's Hill Preschool Program's (ZHPP) staff includes a program director with a degree in education and state certification, six lead teachers with degrees in early education, eight teachers with education degrees or related course work, Spanish teacher, music teacher and a school nurse. The preschool welcomes all faiths and cultures, providing a play based education for children age’s two to five.
The program utilizes a quality assurance process called the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale, or "ECERS," to maintain the quality of its child care. This involves annual visits from an outside evaluator, who assesses staffing policies, curriculum, schedules, health and safety, community relations and the staff's interaction with the children and their parents.
ZHPP creates an environment that nurtures each child's unique talents and abilities. The staff works to develop children's self confidence and a love of learning. They strive to instill self-respect and respect for others along with an appreciation for wonderful differences among people and cultures. In partnership with parents, grandparents, caregivers and the community, ZHPP provides a family atmosphere to support children’s education growth. Zion's Hill Preschool is an Independent Nondenominational School. ZHPP's school community has no religious affiliation.
Zion’s Hill United Methodist Church offers worship services every Sunday morning at 10am. Scripture lessons, an inspirational message from the pastor, congregational singing, and prayer all play vital roles in each service, where members of the congregation are encouraged to share their joys and concerns with the Zion’s Hill community. Music Director Susan Isherwood adds musical elements such as choir to the proceedings, and Holy Communion is offered the first Sunday of every month.
Child care is provided for infants and toddlers, while school-aged children (kindergarten – eighth grade) attend the first part of service and spend the latter part of this time in Sunday School, in the adjoining Christian Education Building. Basing their lessons on the Cook Ministries curriculum, Zion’s Hill Sunday School teachers use activities, discussion, and games to help children learn how to apply the Bible to their everyday experiences.
Zion’s Hill takes an active part in the community, and often works with UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, to find charities and outreach programs. Zion’s Hill has participated in Habitat for Humanity, the Appalachian Service Project, and various soup kitchens and gift-giving programs across the country.
