The Allen County Highway Department maintains and preserves over 1,335 miles of public roadways, 351 bridges, over 800 culverts, 8551 signs, 24 traffic signals, 300 miles of pavement markings, hundreds of drainage structures and many miles of side ditches along its county roads. Located in Fort Wayne, Ind., the highway department has operations from three different locations. Its North and South maintenance facilities provide the day-to-day maintenance of roads that include berming, patching, mowing, grading, brush cutting and snow/ice removal. LaGrange County Soil and Water Conservation District ( SWCD ) is a governmental subdivision of the State of Indiana duly organized March 7, 1952 under the Soil and Water Conservation District Act ( Indiana Code 14-32 ). The district is the "grassroots" unit of government responsible for the soil and water within its county boundaries. The official governing body of the district consists of five supervisors. Three of the supervisors are elected at an annual meeting ; the other two are appointed by the State Soil Conservation Board, based on recommendations from the local district. Supervisors are public officials responsible to the district and the state. A unique partnership exists within the local SWCD office. We are a partnership of federal, state, and county government sharing the office all with the same goal of conservation on the land. The Allen County Superior Court was established in 1816 when Indiana became a state. The court has as its basis a constitutional amendment that was ratified by the people in 1970 and which took effect in 1972. The amendment represented an almost complete rewriting of the 1851 Constitutions Judicial Article. The Allen County Superior Court is served by a Chief Justice and four Associate Justices. The constitution provides that the number of Associate Justices may be increased to eight by action of the legislature. The Allen County Superior Court s incumbent Justices are subject to statewide yes-or-no votes on the question of their retention in office.
