Founded in 1959, United Retirement Center Avera is a nonprofit organization that consists of 75 nursing beds. It also operates congregate living apartments. The center is licensed by the South Dakota Department of Health and is certified for Medicaid and Medicare funding. It provides Eden alternative plan that engages children, plants and animals to combat loneliness. Its living facility offers services, such as meals and snacks, social functions, therapies, housekeeping, laundry, licensed nurse and assistance with daily activities. Located in Brookings, S.D., the facility also offers beauty salon, barbershop, cable television, wellness program and therapy tub. Additionally, the United Retirement Center Avera operates a child development facility that brings together all generations of people in a shared space environment.
