Oakland Cemetery was formed in 1848 after George N. Briggs purchased a plot of land off Cranston Street from Elizabeth Jenkes. Highlights of this cemetery include a granite mausoleum built in 1927 holding 1,200 burials, slate marble and sandstone gravestones and meticulously cared for grave sites with flowers, statues and candles. Most of the cemetery is accessible by car.
Roger Williams Park Casino is a perfect location to hold a special event or occasion and is available for rental any day except Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. Rates vary seasonally and depending on the set-up and capacity. The site offers beautiful scenic views, including of Roosevelt Lake.
At Edgewood Yacht Club, junior, social and full members enjoy dinners, organized cruises and other events, sailing races and access to a 55 slip marina that accommodates sail and power boats ranging from 26 to 50 feet and has electrical service and fresh water access. Established in 1885, the club also offers winter boat and mast storage and provides launch services.
Third Beach is a protected strip of sandy shore fronting the Sakonnet River. Although its calmer waters may not make Third Beach a destination for surfers, it is popular among families with children.
