The Association of American Medical Colleges is a nonprofit association of medical schools, teaching hospitals and academic societies. The AAMC seeks to improve the nations health by enhancing the effectiveness of academic medicine.Founded in 1876 to work for reform in medical education, the AAMC originally represented only medical schools. The AAMC represents and supports constituents through a broad array of programs and studies. The AAMC sets a national agenda for medical education, biomedical research and health care; provides services at the national level to help members accomplish their missions; strengthens the quality of medical education and training to enhance the search for biomedical knowledge; advances research in health sciences; and integrates education into the provision of effective health care. The administrative leadership of medical schools and teaching hospitals are served by a variety of professional development groups within the AAMC.The AAMC provides services to those entering the medical field, including the American Medical College Application Service, the Electronic Residency Application Service, MEDLOANS and the National Resident Matching Service.
