Third Baptist Church was founded in San Francisco in the milieu of the Gold Rush days and its attendant instability. In an attempt to impact the cultural and spiritual life in the growing city of San Francisco, in August 1852, The First Colored Baptist Church of San Francisco was established. The church was founded in the home of William and Eliza Davis, on Kearny Street. With the Daviss, there were seven other Black persons-and a band of devout Christian founders: Abraham Brown, Thomas Bundy, Thomas Davenport, Willie Denton, Harry Fields, George Lewis, and Fielding Spots. In 1854, the First Colored Baptist Church of San Francisco bought the old First Baptist Church and moved it to a location on Dupont Street between Greenwich and Filbert Streets. In 1866, a down payment of $4500 was made toward purchasing the old Howard Presbyterian Church property. Two years later, this property was exchanged for a lot on the corner of Bush and Powell Streets on which was erected a building, dedicated on March 14, 1869, at an appraised value of $40, 000. Thirty years later, in 1899, the final note was paid by the membership of 160. For seven years, the church, under the leadership of Rev. J. H. Kelly, enjoyed the rare experience of community pride and worship. In 1906, the church was destroyed by the fire caused by the earthquake. Within two years, the members had begun to purchase a new church on Hyde and Clay Streets. With a down payment of $25, 000 from the sale of the Bush and Powell Street property, they erected a new $49, 000 church edifice. Through this period of growth and development, Third Baptist became the sole medium of expression of leadership through which the Negro could receive appropriate affirmation and recognition. Although Third Baptist Church had been the functional name since 1855, the name was changed in 1908 to reflect its emergence as the third communion of Baptists founded in the city and its desire to be an inclusive church without racial designations. Also, the church was the first Black Baptist congregation established west of the Rocky Mountains.

The Fairfield Church of Christ is a body of Bible-believing Christians who strive to follow the Lord in all we do. Our goal is to equip the saints here in body, soul, mind, and spirit from the cradle to glory. In 1955 the Fairfield Christ opened the doors of its own building at 1127 Clay Street. The building seated 200 and had 8 classrooms. With slow but steady growth, in 1957 the congregation had approximately 75 members. At this time they started making plans for the churchs first missionary effort. Harold Helf and his family were sent to Pistoria, Italy. In 1962 the Truman Scott family exchanged places with the Helfs. By 1964 the congregation had outgrown the Clay Street building and purchased a little over three acres on Fairfield Avenue. On January 2, 1966, the church met at its new facility which would seat 400 people and had 15 classrooms. In 1967 the first elders of the congregation were installed: H.B. Darnell and Bobby Sparks. Adrian Dukes and Otis Harper were appointed deacons the following year.

Members of Churches of Christ are a people of restoration spirit -- wanting to restore in our time the original New Testament church. In every phase of our worship, teaching, and conduct we stress that our instruction must come from the Bible. Any rules, creeds or principles invented by man have no place in the Church of Christ. Worldwide there are some 20,000 congregations of Churches of Christ with a total of 2.5 to 3 million individual members. There are Churches of Christ in every state and in 109 other countries. Churches of Christ have none of the trappings of modern-day organizational bureaucracy. There are no governing boards -- neither district, regional, national, or international. Each congregation is autonomous (self-ruled). Each congregation is governed locally by a plurality of elders. These men must meet the specific qualifications of the office given in I Timothy 3.

The most complete gathering of our congregation happens on Sunday mornings at 10: 30 a.m. in worship. Our worship reflects the diversity of our church body, with a blend of traditional and contemporary styles of worship that included hymns, praise songs, traditional liturgy and informal times of sharing and prayer. Children are a vital part of our worship. They attend the early part of the service for singing and prayer and a childrens story before they go to classes and child care. There are a number of other smaller gatherings during the week for study, fellowship, and service in the church and in our community. We believe that God is calling us to bless our community by offering ourselves as agents of transformation in the community. Our weekly church service ( Sunday at 10: 30 am ) in the sanctuary reflects the diversity of our church body, with a blend of traditional and contemporary styles of worship that includes hymns, praise music, traditional liturgy and informal times of sharing and prayer.
