The five-member Board of Selectmen meets on the second and fourth Friday of each month at the town offices. Its powers including appointing the Town Administrator, Police Chief, Fire Chief and Town Accountant. The selectmen also hear issues on alcohol licenses, entertainment, code enforcements and resident disputes.
Founded in 1868, this beautiful stone building houses more than 70,000 books and more than 5,000 e-books, movies, periodicals, DVDs and CDs. This two level library offers a Children's Room, many tables, an Internet Cafe, large print magazines, newspapers, reference, and titles in mystery, biographies, nonfiction, and audio books. Library director is Jean Langley. Tip for the library-goer: don't try to go in to the library from the front entrance. In fact, even though the address is Main Street, visitors must get to the parking lot - and entrance - in back by taking Patty Lane.
The collector's office manages and disperses the funds of the town, handling such finances as abatements, real estate taxes, excise taxes and municipal liens.
Led by Director Allison Lane for the past eight years, the Northborough Parks and Recreation Department provides affordable options for recreation and entertainment for the town. The department also maintains some parks in town, and runs after-school programs. The office is located in the Northborough Town Hall on the bottom floor, where there is a basketball court and children's playroom.
A public agency, the Housing Authority is appointed by the Northborough Board of Selectmen. It assists those with low income, the elderly and handicapped by providing housing. It is regulated by Commonwealth of Massachusetts through the Department of Housing and Community Development.
This office is one of the vital destinations within the Town Hall, and houses records such as birth and marriage certificates. Also, this is the office to obtain any information regarding elections. The town clerk is Andrew T. Dowd.
Consisting of seven members, the Conservation Commission is appointed by the Board of Selectmen for three-year terms. The Commission promotes and develops the natural resources and to protect the watershed resources of the town.
Located in Northborough, this Central Massachusetts operation works to control the mosquito population in an effort to control disease transmission.
The Northborough Fire Department provides fire safety, prevention and code enforcement with a fulltime staff of seventeen and an on-call staff of more than twenty. The Department has two ambulances with employees who are licensed EMTs and paramedics. The Department also coordinates disaster-response management and public safety education. The Fire Chief is David M. Durgin.
Appointed by the Northborough Board of Selectmen, Town Administrator John W. Coderre is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the town's municipal government. As he explains to the building's many tour groups - such as the local Boy Scouts - he compares himself to "the coach of a baseball team," overseeing the other town departments, many of which are also located within the Town Hall. The Town Administrator also works closely with the Board of Selectmen.
