The town Athletic Complex & Recreation Dept. includes the Pasquale G. DiLungo Veterans Memorial Ice Rink used for ice hockey, figure-skating lessons and public skating. It also has fields for youth football and soccer, Little League and community softball leagues. The department's swimming pool is located off site in the old high school at 200 Tyler St.
The East Haven Fire Department's administration, a team of 20 career firefighters, and Volunteer Company 1 are housed in the East Haven Fire Headquarters. Chief Doug Jackson, who is also the town's civil defense director, oversees a $5 million annual budget.
The primary function of the Town of East Haven Housing Authority is to assist low-income Section 8 tenants with housing and landlord problems. The Section 8 list is indefinitely closed to new applicants. (Section 8 is an income-based federal housing-subsidy program.) The authority also acts like a real-estate agency by helping people of all income levels find apartments in town. Director Megan McAullife and a part-time secretary run the office.
Probate Judge Michael A. Albis oversees cases involving guardians, conservators and descedents of the state. Until 1955, East Haven was part of the New Haven District Probate Court. That year, the state broke the districts up into 117 local courts, and East Haven got its own. In 2011, due to economics, the state will consolidate the probate court system into 54 locations. East Haven will be joined with North Haven.
The two-story Town Hall building was erected in 1928. It houses 17 departments and offices. Meeting annoucements and agendas for town boards and commissions are posted both inside and outside the Town Clerk's Office on the first floor. On the bottom floor, town business is sometimes conducted in the Giamo Conference Room.
Company 6 is the only all-volunteer firehouse in East Haven. The volunteers own the building, which has a rental hall for parties and celebrations.
The lone function of the East haven Tax Department is to collect property taxes on real estate, motor vehicles, aircraft and business equipment to fund the town's operating budget. Lisa Basilcato is the tax collector.
The Department of Public Service is located down a hill, behind the Police Department. Its 35 workers are in charge of maintaining town vehicles, tending to trees, street drainage, snow plowing and more. The Parks Department, a part of Public Service, takes care of playing fields and cutting grass on town property.
The office of Town Clerk, Stacy Gravino Piccirillo, issues marriage and dog licenses and birth and death certificates. It also keeps files of all land records, commercial and residential and handles absentee ballots.
