Located in St. Michael City Hall, the town's Department of Public Works is made up of three divisions, each responsible for the construction and maintenance of public facilities and the provision of utility services. The engineering department oversees the construction of all new facilities, as well as the preparation of plans, supervision and inspection. The joint water board is responsible for maintenance of the city's sewer system. The streets and parks division is responsible for roadway repairs and regular cleaning and maintenance of the city's parks and thoroughfares.
The Birnamwood Golf Course is a recreation facility. This public course features nine holes and is par 3. Located in central Burnsville, it is open for play in spring through fall, and can accommodate individuals, group outings and league play.

Swim laps in a 25-yard pool, take advantage of aerobics classes, skate on one of two ice sheets or have your birthday party at the center's indoor water park. Those are just a few of the recreational options at Veterans Memorial Community Center. The city's Parks and Recreation Department (open Mon - Fri, 9am - 5:30pm) also operates out of the community center.
