The Greater Hartford Chapter of Hadassah is one branch of the International Hadassah Organization that was founded in 1912 by Henriette Szold. She began by providing help to European immigrants, teaching them English and helping them gain citizenship. Today there are over 300,000 members, making it the largest women's organization in the world! It is a Zionist organization and they began this initiative by helping children in Israel gain medical help. To this day they are heavily involved with health and education issues in the United States and Israel as well as places all over the world.

Khmer Health Advocates was founded by Theauvy Kuoch, MA, in 1982 to care for the health needs of survivors and families of the Cambodian Holocoust. It provides care for people in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts and is the first torture victim treatment program in the United States.

Theanvy Kuoch, a Cambodian survivor, worked with three nurses who had worked in refugee camps in Thailand. The programs and services have received local, national and international recognition and financial support from The United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture, government agencies and individuals.
