Monica Elliotts culinary passion began in the family home when she was a child in her native country of Peru. Her mother, father, and brothers, all of whom enjoyed to cook, often shared the family kitchen. Monicas father specialized in desserts and taught Monica how to create the traditional Peruvian filling used today in her bonbons and other chocolates. After moving to Maine, Monica experimented with her own creations. The first recipe she perfected was the bonbon, based on the Peruvian filling she learned to make as a child. The enthusiastic response she received from friends and family who sampled her bonbons inspired her to develop additional chocolate recipes. At that time, Monica was seeking a new business venture and decided to open a chocolate shop in downtown Lubec. The product line at Monicas Chocolates continues to grow. Some of the most unique chocolates are Pistachio Creme, ( made with organic pistachio paste from Sicily ), Pisco ( made with Peruvian liqueur ), and Sea Urchins, ( a Maine inspired caramel ). New additions to the product line include blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry truffles, and new novelty shaped chocolate lobsters, dolphins, and fish. Each product at Monicas Chocolates is made using the finest quality ingredients, without the addition of artificial flavorings or preservatives and is produced in small batches to ensure freshness.

Whether in celebration or sorrow, the gift of food usually suits the occasion. It can ease the burden of a friend in need or put a smile on a child’s face. I feel that food can bring back great memories and create a sense of comfort. My passion for food developed as a child, sitting on a red swivel stool in the 60’s, in my grandparents coffee shop. My first memories of comfort food are with my Nana. Under the large glass case, was every kind of desert, freshly made with love by Nana. Different shapes, sizes & colors, made my choice a difficult one. As I re-create her recipes, I still remember the passion she had for her craft. Although my Nana taught me much, it was my mother and our times in her kitchen that shaped me into the person I am today. We laughed, cried and solved problems, all over the course of doing the evening dishes. She encouraged me to be my best, follow my dreams and showed me how to love and respect myself and others. God is first, life is precious and tomorrow is never promised. Her unconditional love were the guide stones in my life. I know this may seem like 1960’s nostalgia, but I believe that those principals are timeless. I believe that saying “thank you” is powerful and that a smile can actually change someone’s day. Card & Cookie of Maine, is my way of saying that kindness never goes out of style and sometimes, a little treat, makes everything right. It is our desire at Card & Cookie, that when you open your box, a smile will come across your face, knowing that someone, thought of you today, that you are appreciated, celebrated or missed. We hope that you enjoy the taste and aroma of a handmade cookie, like those my Nana made. We are proud to assist you in making someone’s day a little brighter.
