In 1950, San Diego Blood Bank was established through the support of the San Diego County Medical Society. It operates a National Marrow Donor Program donor center that assists the NMDP in fulfilling its mission by educating, managing and recruiting donors. The donor center was established in 1989 and serves various counties in California, including San Diego, Imperial and South Riverside. There are more than 50,000 volunteers on its local registry. More than 250 of those volunteers have successfully donated stem cells to patients with leukemia or other blood-related diseases. The blood bank additionally offers various educational grants to educational institutions, such as Granite Hills High School and Palomar High School. The blood bank is located in San Diego.
