As you pull into the parking lot of this tiny bar across the street from the Grosse Ile Airport, you are reminded of a friendly little tavern you might find in the Upper Peninsula. That impression continues when you enter to find space for a half-dozen patrons at the mahogany bar and a dozen tables and booths. Pride of place is given to the pool table. The rustic appearance belies its friendliness, however. Although this is obviously a place for friends and neighbors to congregate, strangers are welcomed without reservation.

More than a tavern, Sharkey's is a place families stop for lunch and golfers meet meet after a round of golf at West River Golf and Country Club, with which it shares a building.

This is an unpretentious spot, where the chef is likely to stop by your table to see how you are doing. Sit inside, or choose to sit outside on the patio, where you can enjoy views of the practice green and the Detroit River.

Fridays and Saturday evenings feature live bands, DJs and karaoke. Signature dishes include the all-you-can-eat fish fry, available every day, and the walleye chowder. Executive chef Brian Sharkey, a Grosse Ile High School graduate, sponsors local junior athletics and events for alumni following local football games.

A large tree hangs over the outdoor patio at the front of Lloyd's Bar & Grill. Although it is surrounded by a fence, it is short enough to allow customers to see and be seen, a typical touch for Lloyd's, which is the place locals come to have a beer with friends. An outdoor grill sits on the deck and is pressed into service when the weather is cooperative and the kitchen is overwhelmed. Lunch and dinner are served from 11am - 11pm. Stop by on a Friday night and enjoy the fried perch—if you can get a table.

This cozy and welcoming spot is a throwback to an earlier day. Owner Perry Tsipis is likely to greet you like a long-lost friend as soon as you enter the dimly-lit dining room. Downriver residents have been enjoying lunch and dinner at this spot, situated in the middle of Grosse Ile's business district, since 1985. The menu and portion size, too, are a reminder of another time. Hearty fare includes steak, seafood, lamb and the house specialty, Chicken Perdino. Be sure to try the spaghetti with spicy banana peppers. Every meal comes with soup or salad, a relish tray and fresh bread.
