Alpha Natural Resources, formed in 2002, and its subsidiaries are coal producers with significant operations in northern Appalachia. The company s reserves consist primarily of high BTU, low sulfur steam coal and metallurgical coal. Alpha produces, processes and sells steam and metallurgical coal from approximately eight regional business units supported by 43 active underground mines, 21 active surface mines and 11 coal preparation plants located throughout Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. The company also offers its customers customized products through the purchase and resale of coal mined by others, which Alpha then blends with coal produced from its mines. Alpha Natural Resources is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ANR and is headquartered in Abingdon, Va.
