Des Moines International Airport is a dual civilian/military airport located three miles from central Des Moines. The airport opened in 1933 and the first commercial terminal followed shortly. A new terminal was completed in 1950 and the current structure was constructed in 1970. In 1986, the airport adopted its current name.

The oversight of daily operations, including rental of hangar space, fueling, charter flights and general aviation is undertaken by a contracted airport manager. The airport is used by private aircraft ranging from ultra-light to high-performance. It features concrete runways that are grooved and lit by a remote, three-intensity lighting system. The airport is situated on more than 880 acres of land located northwest of Spencer. It features a lobby that is equipped with computerized weather information, phones, books, charts and space for flight planning. Ground transportation in the form of cars and taxis is available by arrangement.
