Champagne lovers Tom and Cynthia Rosicki had the idea of opening a vineyard on the North Fork, where they both live, since witnessing the birth and growth of Long Island Wine Country over a span of 20 years. In 2001, they began talking with long-time vineyard manager Steve Mudd about acquiring land for their plan. Two years later, they purchased property that was previously a nursery on Route 48 in Southold to plant wine grapes. Sparkling Pointe, the only winery on the North Fork dedicated exclusively to producing home-grown sparkling wine, opened in October 2009. The uber-modern facility, complete with chandeliers and white leather couches, is becoming known for its live entertainment, from celebrity chef appearances to karaoke nights.
Tucked away at the end of an unpaved lane just outside of town, Retzlaff Vineyards is an estate winery that produces organic wines. It is currently the only organic winery in the Livermore Valley. Owned and run by the Taylor family for nearly 30 years, the winery produces world class wines yet maintains an atmosphere that is genuinely friendly and unpretentious. The small, folksy tasting room can easily get crowded, but visitors can enjoy their wine outdoors with a picnic on the lawn or at one of the old wooden tables or gazebo. The barn-like buildings and large surrounding yard with shade trees resemble an old New England farmhouse, and the toy tractors scattered around the lawn make this one of the more child-friendly wineries in the area.
