Far Niente, located in Oakville, Calif., is a winery that specializes in the production of Napa Valley Chardonnay and Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery was founded in 1885 by John Benson, a forty-niner of the California gold rush and uncle of the famous American impressionist painter, Winslow Homer. From the FAY Outlook & Visitor Center, to the Estate Vineyards, to the underground caves, a visit to Stags Leap Wine Cellars is a must-see feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The FAY Outlook & Visitor Center uses plenty of glass to let in natural light and take advantage of the stunning views of the estate vineyards and the Stags Leap Palisades. It allows you to witness the changes the seasons and climate have on our vines in a way that has never been seen before. Just inside the entrance to our Napa Valley wine caves lies the Great Room, a stunning space that glows with the light of hammered copper sconces and shimmering quartzite floors. In the caves there are over 34,000 square feet of tunnels capable of housing 6,000 barrels. At the center of the cave network is the Round Room, where a Foucault pendulum, one of only about fifty in the world, is suspended from the ceiling and marks the passing of time, and the aging of wine.

After working as a day laborer and odd jobs, Rolando Herrera stumbled into winemaking and found out he had a knack for identifying a wine palate while working for Stag's Leap Wine Cellars in 1987. After a promotion, his interest in the winemaking process grew and he later received his certificate of winemaker from the University of California at Davis. And after doing an assistanceship at Chateau Potelle Winery, he began to develop his own wine and produced his first batch of 200 cases of Chardonnay. In 1995 he took the leap and started his own brand and now produces 5,500 cases a year.
