Established in 1935, South Dakota Highway Patrol is a statewide law enforcement agency that investigates crime and reduces criminal activity. It promotes traffic safety, enforces existing statutes, recognizes and eliminates traffic hazards and encourages motorists to practice safe driving techniques. The agency offers motor carrier services that ensure maintenance of carrier s paperwork, permits and necessary documents. It also provides educational information to the public related to motor carrier issues. The South Dakota Highway Patrol also provides investigative assistance and support services to other law enforcement agencies. In addition, the agency provides special counseling and assistance to law enforcement officers and their families. It maintains several specialized units, such as K-9, aircraft patrol, emergency communication, and logistical and emergency support.
