Bob's Sports was founded in 1937 in Stamford by Bob Mallozzi, an Italian immigrant who quit school in the 8th grade and worked for a series of sporting goods stores in the 1920s before deciding to open his own. In 1952, the store moved to the corner of Park and Cherry in New Canaan where it remains to this day, now run by Mallozzi's sons and nephew.
Over the years, the store has shrunk from 35,000 square feet to 3,000 square feet, with the Mallozzi brothers renting out much of the retail space they own. But Bob's Sports soldiers on, largely on the strength of selling uniforms and outfits to local teams. "We're kind of a dinosaur," said Ed Mallozzi. "But we found our niche."
