Gilsonite, a registered trademark of American Gilsonite Company, is a non-hazardous, naturally occurring hydrocarbon resin that is similar in appearance to coal or hard asphalt. Gilsonite is the company s brand name for the mineral known as asphaltum, uintaite or uintahite, which is found in commercial quantities only in the Uintah Basin of northeastern Utah. The mineral is used in more than 160 products, primarily in dark-colored printing inks and paints, oil well drilling muds, cements, asphalt modifiers, foundry sands additives, paving materials and a wide variety of chemical products. The company markets to industrial customers in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.
