The Hop Brook Elementary School, a K-4 school centered just near Route 68, carries a great deal of architectural history, much like other major buildings in the borough of Naugatuck. It was completed in 1916, when it was known as Union City School, by renowned female architect Theodate Pope Riddle. Riddle was also known for designing Avon Old Farms, a private boys' school in Avon. The current principal is Principal Brian Hendrickson. He can be reached via e-mail at [email protected].
Western Elementary School is located in a residential section of Naugatuck, on Pine Street. The K-4 school has just over 260 students who are instructed in math, science, language arts and social studies. There is also an active Parent Teacher Organization that is represented on the school's website. The current principal is Melissa D'Alessandro.
The Naugatuck Day Care Center is a non-profit agency, run by a board of directors, that is funded by the town. The center, located on Carroll Street, provides year-round care for children ages three to five.
Since its inception in 1975, the day care has operated out of a self-contained building which also includes a playground. All teachers at the center are required to have a Bachelors Degree, an Associates Degree or a Child Development Associate certification. They are also required to be certified by the American Red Cross in Child CPR and First Aid.
The current director is Joy Carlson. The day care can be reached by e-mail at [email protected]
Built in 1893, Salem Elementary School is the oldest operating school in Naugatuck. Bequeathed to the town by John Howard Whittemore, who also funded the Hillside Middle School and Howard Whittemore Library among others, Salem has supported grades K-4 since around 1950.
Children at this downtown school are instructed in a curriculum that includes math, science, language arts and social studies. Because of its central location, Salem School students will spend some of their instructional time outside the school walls, visiting the Naugatuck Historical Society, the Howard Whittemore Library and the firehouse. The mayor and the local state representative also come to the school and read to the students.
The school's Flag Day ceremony is also a well-attended event, known among Naugatuck residents. The current principal is Principal Jennifer Kruge. She can be reached via e-mail at [email protected].
