The Martinez News Gazette is one of the oldest, and one of the smallest, newspapers in the state. It began publishing in Martinez in 1858, and has gone through several iterations before finally winding up as part of a chain owned by Gibson Publications. The Gazette operates out of a small brick building on Estudillo, where a staff of one news reporter, one sports reporter, one managing editor, an advertising sales manager and office manager put out the paper on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
Over the years, the community has routinely supported and villified the paper, depending on the editor at the time, and the political climate. Through it all, the Gazette continues to cover local news, announcements and events.
