The Mountainside Police Department is on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, patrolling the borough and responding to reports of crimes or emergencies. Currently, the department is headed by Chief James Debbie, Jr.

The staff of 22 consists of a chief of police, lieutenant, detective-sergeant, sergeant, corporal, detectives and officers.

The department operates five marked patrol cars, plus three unmarked cars and a special duty truck. The vehicles are equipped with police radios, computers and a video camera.

The department maintains a patrol division and a detective bureau, which is responsible for criminal investigations. A six-member accident investigation team is responsible for the reconstruction of major and fatal motor vehicle accidents. There are also three Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) officers, two physical fitness officers and four firearms instructors.

Local #126 of the Policemen's Benevolent Association represents its officers during contract and labor negotiations and sponsors community programs.
