One of the oldest churches on Grosse Ile, Sacred Heart Church is also one of the most unique. Its altar is located in the center of the worship space, with the pews surrounding it on all sides. In addition, a soaring, glass-fronted gathering space was added in 1988, creating a dramatic, but accessible entrance. For many years, this unique space was the site of an island-wide ecumenical holiday celebration. The open feeling of the architecture is reflected in the warmth and welcome offered by parishioners. In addition to the main church, services are held in a small stone chapel (the original church) located on church-owned land on the Detroit River. Many brides choose this picturesque site for their weddings.

Although mainstream, St. James is far from stuffy. This Christian church was founded in 1868 through a bequest by Elizabeth "Lisette" Denison Forth, a freed slave, who asked that her life savings be used to create a place where rich and poor could worship together. Her memory is honored on the doors of the small chapel located on St. James' property. The congregation is active in the community, welcoming everyone to services and to participate in their three major fund-raising efforts: spring and autumn rummage sales and a holiday greens market. Summer services--and many weddings--are held in Lisette's charming chapel, with its red doors and Tiffany stained-glass window. No matter what the season, though, services are followed by a gathering in the church's large parlor.
