In 1867, in the river town of Cloverport, KY, John E. Keith rode on horseback to call on his customers, received delivery of stones by riverboat and lettered each by hand. Times have certainly changed. Keith Monument came to Elizabethtown in 1901. Since then, they have made their presence known throughout and beyond the boundaries of Kentucky. Now in their sixth generation, the Keith Family and the employees at Keith Monument have one primary focus… the individual needs of those who come to them for monuments. It has long been a Keith Monument Philosophy that, "A monument is built because there was a life, not a death… and it should inspire reverence, faith and hope for the living." In addition to personal memorials, Keith Monument also has long been recognized in the area of civic and public memorials, not only in Kentucky, but in other states as well. We are in our sixth generation now.

Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville is a 300-acre Victorian-era cemetery located in the heart of the Highlands. If you're picturing endless rows of gravestones and plastic flower vases, think again. This cemetery is as much a landmark and event destination as it is a final resting place for some of Kentucky's most famous, and most historic, sons and daughters.

Parking and public transportation at Cave Hill Cemetery
There is ample, free parking inside the cemetery, but visitors are not allowed to park on the grass. Certain vehicles, such as bicycles, motorcycles, motor homes, and buses are not allowed within the park gates. There is public transportation available on the TARC with Route 23 being the route for Cave Hill Cemetery along Bardstown Road.

Best and worst times to go to Cave Hill Cemetery
The cemetery is not a public park and does have operating hours from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. each day. The best times to go are during the summer and spring months when the cave operates a tour that focuses on the horticultural highlights and floral grave displays, which are quite not the average grave display. Cave Hill Cemetery is rarely busy, except for scheduled tours or school field trips so a call ahead might make for a more pleasant visit.

Admission to Cave Hill Cemetery
General admission to the cemetery is free. Visitors are allowed to stroll around and there is an app for a walking tour. However, the Cemetery does offer several tour packages with costs ranging from $15-35 which will give visitors more information and insight about the history of the cemetery, its inhabitants, the flora and fauna in the cemetery, as well as a twilight and a tram tour. Seasonal tours and talks are also offered at different times throughout the year, so be sure to check the calendar.

Must see/do at Cave Hill Cemetery
If you're into rubbing elbows with the famous, be sure to check out the graves of these inhabitants: Adventurer George Rogers Clark, Kentucky Derby founder Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., Kentucky Fried Chicken Founder Colonel Harland Sanders, and sisters Mildred and Patty Hill, who wrote "Happy Birthday to You."

Other places to visit near Cave Hill Cemetery

Roger Nelson, early on, seemed to be destined to be in the funeral home business. The youngest of six siblings, Roger was given his name from one chosen from a tombstone in a cemetery by his older sisters. Nelson, Floyd County Coroner, began the business in 1971. He credits Bill Calihan and Larry Burke as being his mentors. The funeral homes motto, "Our family caring for your family, " rings true in every sense of the words. For "family" can be seen in nearly every room and aspect of the business. "Holding steadfast to family traditions, like were use to here in the mountains, " Nelson says, contributes to his growing and continually exp-anding funeral home business. Both Nelson and his wife, Sandy, are funeral directors. "I never dreamed Id be in this bus-iness, " Sandy said. "But when we lost our first child, a daughter, I wanted to be able to help peo-ple in their time of loss, like I had experienced, " she continued. Both sons, Gregory Scott and Roger Gene Nelson II, are also now licensed funeral directors, and embalmers. And the business family tree doesnt end there. Roger Nelson shared some of the changes that he has encountered through the years. "When we first started in the business, we had 58 services - that was in 1986. Last year, there were 379 services. People used to take their family members back to their homes, or to their church in the past. Funeral homes are now used more today for funeral services." He explained. The Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home originally began in a two-story building that quickly grew to its newer and more enlarged Martin location found today. And, not only the city of Martin but that of Hindman, also, are now other locations for the family owned and operated business. Additionally, another expansion to the family business is Nelson Monument Company. The Nelsons are quick to give praise to their extended staff which includes: Chuck Hall, Amy Campbell, Debbie Frazier, Jeremiah Swiger, Ballard Jones, Debbie Prater, Willa Dean Combs, Bonnie Reynolds, Kennith Gayheart, Jimmy Smith, Kermit Short, Larry Burke, Roger Rowe, Betsy Frazier, Sandra Baldridge, and Corey Watson. In your time of need, Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home truly can be found to be a neighboring and sympathetic "Family Caring for your Family"!
