History of McCarthy Brothers Liquors McCarthy Brothers Liquors was established in 1888 by James and John McCarthy, who settled in Charlestown after emigrating from County Cork, Ireland. The two brothers bought out Corey and Goodwin Grocers, which sold dry goods on Moulton Street since 1857. The store still operates out of the original building, although is has been upgraded several times over the years, including a complete makeover in February of 1998. The McCarthy Brothers sold beer in open containers. ( customers would come in with their pails and fill them up ), and rectified whiskey in the cellar. When prohibition came in 1920, the store sold dry goods to their customers. On December 5, 1933, the ban on liquor was repealed, and James and John transferred the license to their nephew, Henry F. McCarthy, Sr., who was a General Contractor at the time. Henry Sr. took his two sons to work with him, Henry F. McCarthy, Jr., and Thomas J. McCarthy. Henry Sr. continued as President, and incorporated the business in 1938 before retiring in 1945. Henry Jr. and Thomas ran the business together and then took over the small grocery store on the corner of Vine and Moulton Streets during the forties. It was at that time they separated the Liquor and Grocery departments, with Henry running the Liquor Store, and Tom running the Grocery store. Towards the end of the forties, Tom went into the funeral business, and left McCarthy Brothers. Henry Jr. continued to run the business through the next three decades. During the sixties and seventies, children of Henry and Tom worked for the business at various times. Upon graduation from school, two of those children would join the firm on a permanent basis. Richard J., and Henry F. McCarthy, III, both sons of Henry F. McCarthy, Jr., who retired in 1983. They ran McCarthy Bros. together for the next 23 years. In 2006, Henry F. McCarthy, III left the business and Richard currently continues to run the business. McCarthy Brothers is the oldest continuously operated family business in Charlestown, now in its fourth generation. 9 Moulton Street Charlestown, MA 617.242.4877 [email protected] Actual 5 Cent "Script" Dated Jan 1, 1863 and used at our store by Corey & Goodwin. There are three backbones of our business: our customers, our suppliers and our staff. We are proud of the fact that we have many employees who have been with us for over 10 years. We are also proud to offer a wonderful environment for young, hardworking and passionate people to work with us and learn the trade. Many of these folks have since gone of to start their own stores which we are pleased to say have been wildly successful in their own rights. Whether it be washing our dishes, working the registers, baking cookies and cakes, preparing our meals, caring for our cheeses or sourcing the best produce possible, our staff is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of quality in the work we do. We hope you have the chance to stop in and visit us at any of our stores youll see what were all about. The history of the store is intertwined with that of owners Ihsan and Valerie Gurdal. Ihsan and Valerie own and run Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge, Massachusetts, South End Formaggio in Bostons historic South End and their newest venture Formaggio Essex Market in the Essex Street Market in New Yorks Lower East Side. All of their stores offer a wide selection of handcrafted cheeses, artisan meats and specialty foods. Ihsan was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey surrounded by a culture famous for its bazaars full of varied flavors and fragrances. Ihsan added his own twist to this mix by becoming a star volleyball player and in 1976 he participated in the Olympics as a member of the Turkish Olympic volleyball team. In 1977, Ihsan left Istanbul to pursue a college education at UC Berkley. As a student at Berkley Ihsan played volleyball and tapped into his natural appreciation of specialty food by working at a local wine shop. In 1982, Ihsan took advantage of an offer to become head volleyball coach at Harvard University and left Berkley for Cambridge, Massachusetts. While in Cambridge, Ihsan kept his interest in food alive by working at a small specialty food store called Formaggio Kitchen. Soon after starting his work at the shop, Ihsan became manager and cheese buyer. Following his retirement from Harvard volleyball, Ihsan was able to put all of his energy into Formaggio Kitchen. In 1992, Ihsan took over ownership of the shop and since that time has presided over the shops development into one of the leading retailers of gourmet foods in the country. He has worked extensively with celebrated cheese makers and affineurs throughout the United States and Europe, including Neals Yard Dairy of London, Pascal Jacquin of Frances Loire Valley, and Paris Fromagerie Barthelmy. His travels around the world have brought to Formaggio Kitchen an unparalleled selection of rare and unique cheeses and fine foods from around the world. Many have been introduced to the US for the first time and are only available from Formaggio Kitchen. On November 10, 2008 Ihsan received the title of Chevalier of the Ordre du M rite Agricole from the French government. This title was given to Ihsan for his tireless work in supporting French agricultural artisans by introducing his stateside customers to their hand-crafted products.

This location of the local chain is just off of the 95-93 interchange and in the same parking lot as the Woburn Mall. Colonial has its own parking spaces so you'll never have to battle it out for parking with mall customers just to get a few beers. This is a high-dollar, up-scale kind of place, offering very nice liquors and wines of exceptional vintage. They do, however, have plentiful cases of Bud Light and some PBRs in the back, if you are in need of something a little rough around the edges.

Their savvy comes from 40 years of experience in the wine and liquor industry and results in the ability to identify and obtain premium wines at a great value that is then provided to our customers. Our family tradition of wine-selling has given us keen insight into finding the best sources of fine wines available and seeking innovative ways to reduce our operational costs. That value is always passed down to our customers. Sam Messina found himself drawn to the world of wine at the age of 27 when his uncle shared with him a bottle of 1961 Beychevelle, a life-changing experience that ignited his love of wine. Sam took his love of the industry and used that to help grow his familys business, Messinas Liquors, from a beer, liquor and jug wine store, into a successful fine wine destination in the Merrimac Valley for over 25 years. As the manager of the store, Sam not only learned to further hone his skill and expertise in the wine industry, but became keenly aware of the needs and desires of his customers and found himself always shopping the market to find new and amazing wines that he knew his customers would love. In addition to helping customers find the perfect wines for their needs on a daily basis, Sams expertise is in pairing food with wine for both individual buyers and restaurants. He also has a passion for setting-up and selecting wines for personal wine cellars and has spent significant amounts of time educating consumers on wines, their attributes and the overall industry as a whole. When the Messina family business closed in 2008, Sam wanted to continue to share his experience and, especially, his love of wine. Sam is not only passionate about finding great wines, but really gets a kick out of finding a great wine for an incredible value. Imagine a $6 bottle of wine that tastes like its worth $25. If its out there, Sam can find it! The result of Sams passion is the Wine ConneXtion which brings the concept of fine wines at low prices to Massachusetts and creates an innovative and premier shopping destination for both everyday wine drinkers and collectors alike. Her vision to transform the family-owned business, Messinas Liquors, into a fine wine store selling wine at discount prices came
