Founded in 1968, the United Transportation Union, also known as UTU, is one of the largest railroad operating unions in North America. It is a transportation labor union that represents more than 125,000 active and retired railroad, bus and mass transit workers in the United States and Canada. With more than 600 locals, it represents conductors, brakemen, switchmen, ground service personnel, locomotive engineers and hostlers. The union also works to protect its members and the public from the unsafe shipment of hazardous materials. It creates awareness related to drug and alcohol abuse, as well as offers passenger services. With a location in Gillette, Wyo., the organization conducts training sessions on topics related to job assignments, promotions, discrimination and favoritism.
