Chimes was the first school in Maryland for children with moderate mental retardation. In 1947, a group of Baltimore parents decided they could not accept the lack of educational opportunities for children with mental retardation. They founded a school using borrowed space in a church and named it The School of the Chimes after the church bells they heard there everyday. It has since grown into an international agency that delivers a range of programs and services for nearly 10,000 people with mental retardation, mental illness and other disabilities. With agencies in six states, the District of Columbia and Israel, Chimes Internationals services include educational services, employment, residential services, senior living services, substance abuse services, vocational training and psychiatric clinics.
